Even if you do your best to stay safe when you are driving on the road, there is nothing stopping other drivers from putting your safety at risk. If you suffered an injury due to a car accident, you might be interested in filing a claim to receive compensation for your damages. It is important to understand the different types of insurance which is available if you are involved in a car accident. Our team is here to help you make sure that you get what you deserve.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance will pay for damages caused by an at-fault driver. That driver’s insurance is responsible for paying for the damages suffered by the victims of the automobile accident caused by the at-fault driver. Unfortunately, sometimes the amount of liability insurance is not enough to pay for all the damages caused by the at-fault driver. In that case, you can tum to your uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage

Your insurance policy will contain uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. It is required by Maryland law. The purpose of this coverage is to supply benefits above the liability insurance coverage of an at-fault driver. It is one way that you can help to make sure that you and your family have sufficient insurance coverage to cover your damages if you are involved in an auto accident. The way it works is this: if an at-fault driver has $30,000.00 in liability insurance coverage and you have $100,000.00 in UM/UIM coverage, you would be entitled to claim the $30,000.00 from the at-fault driver’s insurance and an additional $70,000.00 from your UM/UIM coverage, for a total of $100,000.00 to pay for your damages.

Personal Injury Protection

This coverage is no-fault coverage, usually in the amount of $2,500.00. These benefits are required for every insurance policy issued in Maryland. These benefits help with initial medical bills and lost wages a victim suffers following a car accident. It does not matter if the person was the at-fault driver or the person that the driver collided with. It is basically to help with the expenses and lost wages resulting from the auto accident until the person can get back to work.
